Pulpotomy
When a tooth gets carious and breaks down, the pulp or nerve tissue inside the tooth gets infected with the bacterial toxins. Left unaddressed, it could turn into a full-blown infection that would destroy not only the tooth but also the surrounding bone, soft tissue, and periodontium.
Pulpotomy is a procedure during which we remove the infected coronal pulp; the space is irrigated with disinfectants and filled with an inert filling material, which holds fast. The caries and infection are removed while maintaining the pulp’s vitality, and hence, the healing of the tooth continues.
We perform the procedure mostly under the influence of anesthesia, and adequate pain relief is obtained. Young children with incomplete root formations in primary teeth or permanent teeth with traumatic pulp exposure are the best candidates for this treatment.
